Will we know when a last time comes on a day?
And if we did I wonder what we'd feel and say

That last time we will dance on a ballroom floor
From waltzes to jitterbug all night and beg for more

That last long walk we take in the early spring
The last time we listen as the Robins sweetly sing

The last time we have coffee, converse with a friend
Will we know it’s the last time before it's the end

The last time we kneel and plant in a garden we love
The last time we gaze at blue sky, white clouds above

If we knew our last autumn was playing in final repose
Would we savor more its glory as if summer's last rose

We know not when any last time shall come to us I say
So we must surely relish and cherish every single day

Our days are showered upon us as a most benevolent gift
But last times race forward as the sands of time will sift

After the death this week of a lifelong friend, I have been thinking
about how I really take so much for granted in life.  I am now at the
age where I can no longer do this.  I should not have been doing it
before.  I had not seen this friend for many years, but I wonder if
if that last time we were together, if I had known that it was the last
time, would I have done things differently?  I feel that many last times are imminent at this stage of my life so I am going to do my best to remind myself that the sunset I casually glance at today might well be my very last one.
