| It's a quiet neighborhood these days With all the children grown and away Some stayed close to their hometown And some moved far away, can't be found. You know Siggy and me have always been here In the same old houses that have held up dearly Remember the old days, when we played out late And our mamas were calling as we reached the gate. Them was the good ole days, we played with dolls But we really liked to watch and play leap frog. Remember all the frogs that came out each year And we never did one time, have anything to fear. There weren't any other girls in our neighborhood So we played boy games and learned to chop wood. These old houses got awfully cold back then Didn't have no heat pumps to blow the heat in. But we didn't know any better, we were used to the cold We thought it was the way of life until we got old. We were so innocent and had so much to learn About coal burning furnaces, and money earned. But as we got older, the play time had ended We both found jobs, but had to watch our spending. We'd give our Pa's money to help out And they'd always be so thankful, there was no doubt. Well, as time went on, so did we. We met some fellas, our husbands to be. We had some children of our own to raise But we stayed in touch, during them days. Our thoughts often came back here to home And all the fun we had as younguns We tried to teach our children about forever friends And how important they would be, even to the end. No one should go through life without at least one, But it was always nice to have more when you're young. Because when you get up in years and stay at home With friends close by, you don't feel so all alone. Our children are all grown up now and we have grands But they never once did put a cramp in our plans. We have had a very long and blessed life And the good Lord has always protected us from strife. Now we are back to stay and call this home again Our folks have gone on to the Promised Land Our husbands too, we have out lived them all Our children live away, but they give us calls. We've been best friends close to a century now The Lord surely knew to put us together somehow. We've lived our lives, and have had a wonderful time We even got indoor plumbing now, that's mighty fine. Written By Shirley Barr March 3, 2005 A story of friendship that could have been true ! |
