How can the death of a child
push us so far apart?
How can the joy we once shared
Now be breaking our hearts?
Who built this wall between us?
How did we drift so far apart?
Why has our love become so cold?
What's happened to the warmth in our hearts?
We both loved our son
He was our shining star.
How can the love we once shared
Be so distant and far?
I can hardly accept the loss
Of the child who meant so much.
And now I am losing you,
We are so out of touch!
You reach out and I pull away.
I cry, your face turns to stone.
We need to touch and be touched,
Our body language says, "Leave me alone!"
Fantasy becomes the reality
And reality we cannot face.
Slowly we are drawing inward
And shutting out the human race.
And now we are shutting out each other
And sealing off our hearts.
The pain is too great; we can't let go
We don't even know where to start.
Then in our deepest desperation
Our hands reached out and touched.
Our eye held and we remembered
The child we loved so much.
A child who would want us united
In this time of sadness and grief.
He would expect us to be together
And to hold on to our belief.
And after the sorrow of this loss lessens
A greater joy awaits.
And together, someday, we will join him
Just beyond Heaven's Gates.
