| Mason jars stored away Waiting for preserving day Every year it was the same, Preparing fruit and label names. Apples, peaches, figs and pears Always plenty made to share Sugar, spices, recipes out, Learning what making was all about. First we’d gather in the fruit, Make sure the apples are right to suit. Not to ripe and not to green Picked ‘em just in time it seemed. Wash and peel, slice and dice, Prepare just right or do it twice. Pull out the pot for mixing, Cook that syrup just right for fixing. Prepared the canner right to boil, Sterilize them jars, don’t want no spoil. Get them lids ready to screw Gotta make them seal when you’re ready to. Rinse the apples and drip them dry, Gonna prepare some for a pie. We’ll do a batch for apple butter And store in jars, as the others. Pears are next, Oh, what a treat Preserves on toast just can’t be beat. Figs are good to spread on too With a cup of coffee or a Mt. Dew! Yep, those were the days of simple living, Packing Mason jars with yummy filling. Stack ‘em in the pantry to eat all year, Always gotta treat,, never fear! !
